iPhone Obsession

I know, I know. A couple weeks ago, it was the Sopranos. This week, it’s the iPhone. Can’t I go just one fracking month without obsessing about something?

Gotta do something about this. It’s the first day of my vacation, and I’m sitting in Starbucks, drinking and loading up the Apple Store website on the Powerbook, looking for the closest Apple retail location to where I’m going to be when it all goes up tomorrow at 6pm.

How sad.

It’s a phone. And a video iPod. And a camera. And an organizer. With email.

It’s basically this:

With a camera. And I’m spending considerable time planning on how to get one (spending $599, and committing for 2 years to a digital network claimed by many as the worst of all available) AS SOON AS THEY COME OUT.

Again, I say. How sad. What’s wrong with me?

Especially, when you can see from the photo that buying an iPhone will subscribe me to a THIRD digital service (T-Mobile, Verizon and now AT&T or Cingular - whatever. I’m confused). Do I REALLY need 3 ways to connect to other people? Sometimes, I think my ability to connect with other people AT ALL is at the heart of 99.9% of all my problems, and I’m getting ready to sign up for another channel to keep that river of woe flowing unimpeded.

But, it’s my drinking, controlled. It’s my drug use, controlled. It’s my running around with women, controlled. Not that any of those things have ever cast its pall over my life, but that’s my excuse to my wife. I don’t drink, smoke, run around with women or watch much TV. I don’t have a ham radio and spend countless hours hammering out morse code, trying to make contact with every continent within 24 hours, nor do I live my weekends under a beat up car in the garage, only my feet and shins visible from 6pm Friday until bedtime on Sunday. Of course, once I find one of these to rebuild, that may all change…

Go ahead, click on the image. There’s a whole ‘nother world out there, bunky.

But until then, my gadgets, mostly with Apple logos engraved on them, are my vice.

All in all, tt’s not a bad life.
