Best Cats Ever

This isn’t a cat blog, nor do I go about posting pics of my girls, but I think it’s appropriate, since today we lost Abbey, just over two years after losing Neko.

They were great cats, hardly any trouble, more or less sociable (depending on the person - isn’t that always the way?) and patient with our numerous moves across the country. I lived with Abbey longer than with any other creature, human or otherwise on this earth. She was almost 20 when she passed away today at the vet, minutes before she would have been euthanized. I had both her and Neko before I met my wife and we had our son, and they made the transition from surrogate children to pet without complaint. Also without complaint they endured the joyful pursuit and tail-pulling of my toddler son.

I’m comforted that he was able to say goodbye to Abbey as we left on that last trip to the vet today. She had gone decidedly downhill in the past 24 hours, and it was obvious at about noon today that things were beyond repair. I hope Neko was waiting for her, ready to resume their companionable ignoring of each other, except for the occasional good-natured wrestling match.

I think it’ll be a while before we bring another pet into the house. They set a pretty high standard.
