The Win

It’s interesting. Our President (said without rancor or snarl) says “America has spoken.” The right’s propaganda machine (as opposed to the left’s machine) is talking about the clear mandate. They’re touting (and will continue to tout) that no candidate since 1988 has gotten a majority of the voters, and yes, that’s true. But President Bush should not forget this:

John Kerry, yesterday, received 5 million more votes than either the President or Al Gore got in the 2000 election, and he lost.

Imagine that. If someone told you that on election day, John Kerry would get 5 million more votes than Bush got in 2000, you’d assume a Democrat was moving into the White House in January, wouldn’t you? Of course the kicker is, Bush got some 8 million more votes this time, and that was the margin.
