Here we go again
I would say that this will last about 5 minutes, but a couple really smart guys are involved, Jon Sinton and Dave Logan.
Why am I not full of confidence in Al Franken and Janeane Garofalo? Because my 25 years in broadcasting has taught me that what radio listeners want is not what these guys are offering. They take themselves way too seriously, just like they take Rush and Hannity too seriously.
It’s showbiz, not just rhetoric that draws millions to listen to right-based talk radio. The folks who dream of a lefty network just don’t get that. They understand when showbiz is about showbiz, but don’t get that talkradio isn’t that far removed from what they do.
Best of luck to them though. Al Franken makes me laugh a lot, but was an ass when he was on my show many years ago (on a music station, promoting his live appearance during the SNL days with Tom Davis). Janeane Garofalo is hilariously funny and babish when she wants to be (but I get the feeling she’s offended by men thinking she’s a babe when she dresses up for a paycheck - kind of a weird thing).
Listening to Franken’s show, I’m flabbergasted by the fact that the show is called the “O’Franken Factor” and they’re talking to a childhood friend of Al’s, a “ditto-head.” I hope that this focus on righty-talk radio is either an April Fool’s joke or maybe just a launch tactic.
They’re going to have to do better than that if they’re to find an audience of their own. It’s going to have to be passionate, rather than mean and sarcastic.
